It was a great day! We went to the drag races with another couple from church. This is the third year in a row we've done this. It's kind of become a tradition now. Usually there are other people with us, too. But, today it was just the four of us. Not even one kid with us. It was great to be able to just enjoy adult company for an entire day. The difference today was it was COLD! We all had about three layers on which was enough when you were down in the pits, but sitting up in the bleachers with that wind blowing was a little chilly. Usually we're wearing shorts for the drag races.
We dropped the kids off at Michael's parents' house a little before 9:00 this morning and then went over to Steve and Stacey's house. It's about a 40 minute drive to get to the raceway from where we live. Then, it's about a 10 minute walk from where we are allowed to park until you get inside the gate.
We wandered around the pits for a little over an hour or so before we started to head to the grandstands. I noticed I'd lost my headphones. I thought I knew where I dropped them so Stacey and I went back to look for them. I was right and found them. I'm usually ok without them until they get to the top fuel cars. Those are too loud to not have them on.
Stacey and I stopped for a potty break and then got a snack before going up into the grandstands. We found Michael and Steve and sat down. They were just starting the motorcycle races when we sat down so we didn't really miss anything at all.
This was still the qualifying races today, so it was a long day. They finished the first round about the time they were supposed to start the second round. During the break we went back down into the pits. Michael and I bought t-shirts for the kids. Caleb got another Nitrofish shirt (his third) and Michaela just got a general NHRA shirt that says "Anything you can do I can do faster." I looked for sunglasses but they were all to manish. We thought we were going to buy new insulated mugs, but all the ones they had were too small.
Stacey still needed to find something for Lauren so we sent the guys back up into the grandstands and Stacey and I looked for a shirt for Lauren. She got a cute little NHRA shirt with a heart in the middle.
The second round goes faster than the first round. But, they had a couple cars blow up and that always causes a delay while they clean the mess of the track. It was after 5:30 pm before we left. Michael called his parents to see if they minded if we went out to eat before coming to get the kids. I think his mom was relieved. It was really cold today and she (I think) wanted an excuse to not go and sit and watch Jeremy Jr.'s baseball game.
So, the four of us went out to TGI Friday's for supper. It was really good. We were all pretty hungry. Stacey and I had had a little something to eat earlier in the day, but the guys hadn't eaten anything. We were all pretty tired by the time we sat down to eat and I think we were really enjoying the no kid time. None of us seemed eager to get up from the table even when we were finished eating.
Steve and Stacey decided to pick up their two youngest kids before taking us back to their house to get our truck. I just love Lauren. She's such a cutie. I got to talk with her and hold her on my lap the short little drive back to their house.
We said goodbye at their house and went to get our kids. They looked really tired, too. It sounds like they kept Grammy and Papa pretty busy, too. Papa got home before we left and announced that Jeremy Jr. won his baseball game! Yeah! It sounds like he got a lot of chances to bat, too.
We finally came home around 8:30 pm. Poor Abby really needed to go outside. She seemed like she really missed us. She's not used to us being gone that long of a period without someone coming home to let her out at least.
Caleb somehow found the races we'd been to on ESPN with no problem at all and watched them for about 20 minutes before he had to go to bed. Michael kept it on. It's kind of cool to see them from the angle of a camera. But, now I can no longer keep my eyes open. Time for bed.
